The exhibition opening was a hit!
On Thursday we hung the photos. It looks simple but trust me when I say it is not as easy as it seems. We started at 5pm and were done a little before 11pm. With gallery hanging it is not like hanging at home... nail in wall boom your done. As galleries and musuems hang hundreds of artworks in hundreds of different shapes and sizes, popping a nail into the wall isn't often a possibilty as there would too much wall damage. Plus, there would be a need for cover up work after each exhibition which takes too much time and money in the long run and not really worth it for shorter shows. So how do we hang then? Either from the ceiling or from rafters which are usually very high up. Sound easy it's not! You have to hang work as high as 10ft and then try to straighten and align all the work. Not easy but really beautiful when it is done! 6 hours later...
The show looks so good! I am so very proud of us! I really really like the other ladies work and feel really blessed to have been given the chance to work with them! Tina takes a lot of local shots of life in Stockholm, very documentary style which I love... she is a buss driver and has images from all over the city on her blog, check it out... so so good! Sara's work is very subtle and soft and it has kind of a 60's feel (at least those she hung in the show). I really really liked her work and could totally see her work in my home! Her blog is a mix of photos and writing about her life. Marie's work is also a personal sort diary of her life in images and words. Her images in the show were really dramatic and beautiful and peaceful all at the same time which is not easy!
The turn out for the opening was much better then I anticipated. I think I thought it would be about half as many people but there was a constant flow of people coming and going. Tony and the kids came right at noon when we opened and staid for about 15 or 20 minutes. Then from 12:20-3pm I had NO visitors. Marie, Tina and Sara had guests coming and going while I read magazines and tried not to look saddened but in the end I had a decent turn out. The late arrivals were actually my own doing as we planned sangria and finger foods at our place after the show so people came between three and four so that it would not be too long of a wait until they headed to our place. I made one possible sale... we will have to wait and see but the person in question seemed VERY interested and had many questions about the photos he was interested in so we will see... he said he would get in touch with me in the coming days. Oh and I even got three bunches of flowers! So sweet!
I am feeling pretty motivated right now so I hope the inspirations keep coming and thus more work will be done and more shows will had in the furure. Back in my New York days, before kids, I was shooting ALL the time and I was really focused on trying to build an exhibition resume but the last few years I have been totally unmotivated but I believe the "times they are a changin"
